The Negotiating MASTERCLASS | Chris Voss and Shane Parrish
Chris Voss, an ex-FBI negotiator, blew everyone’s mind when his book “Never Split The Difference” came out.
A fellow engineer asked me for advice on getting buy-in on an initiative & I revisited one of the better interviews Chris gave.
I got reminded that “fear gets in the way of deals”, and that resonated with the model of 4 Forces (one of which is “Anxiety”) in the Jobs-to-be-done theory taught by Bob Moesta (who incidentally often quotes Chris Voss).

Clarifying Options: Imagine that the option you’re currently leaning toward simply vanished as a feasible alternative. What else could you do?
Archipelago of Ideas: Appropriate when you want to avoid staring at a blank page, this workflow strategy provides a scaffolding of interesting ideas that you can then fill in and link together to write a document, create a design, or plan a presentation. Start by collecting a batch of starting ideas from the most relevant notebooks and then string those ideas together. You can collect these ideas in your notes slowly over time, summarizing the words or phrases that resonate the most, and when the time comes to put them to use, create an outline with the ideas that seem relevant for the project at hand. WHAC: Stands for What is it? - How does it work? - Are you sure? - Can you do it? It’s a method I was taught in the “Defining Outcomes” course, and it’s from “The 3-Minute Rule”. Use it to structure your presentations when trying to get buy-in for a particular direction. In W & H you conceptualise the direction. In A, you contextualise it. In C, you actualise it.
